Andreas Both from Unister presented another great talk on the second day of the 6th LDBC Technical User Community (TUC) meeting held in Barcelona. His talk “E-Commerce and Graph-driven Applications: Experiences and Optimizations while moving to Linked Data” revolved around an e-commerce use case.

Unister is one of the biggest B2C e-commerce companies in Germany and the presentation focuses on their experience and optimizations while moving to the use of Linked Data in the e-commerce field. With the implementation of graph and RDF solutions, e-commerce companies want to take advantage of linked data and unchain data stores from the schema.

Andreas Both highlights the need for fast, robust and scalable query engines to fulfill requirements for industrial applicability in e-commerce and the needs of ecommerce users to have answers now. He explains their data preparation process into BitSets, taking advantage of the star pattern in data, and how they allow operations in-memory, easier updates & inserts with a small footprint. The former data representation with Bitsets was integrated in Virtuoso with the help of the OpenLink team within the GeoKnow project funded by the EU by preparing interfaces that were not available and their at-hand support. Andreas presents the results for the BitSet representation having a boost on response time.
